Walmart Canada has launched its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric semi-truck in Mississauga, Ontario, marking a significant step in the retailer's journey towards a 100% alternatively-powered fleet. The Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 tractor, with zero tailpipe emissions, is capable of traveling around 800 kilometers and can prevent 97 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. This move makes Walmart Canada the first major retailer in Canada to introduce hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-trucks. The truck was sourced by ITD Industries Inc. and will be used for longer-haul trips in Ontario. Gonzalo Gebara, Walmart Canada's president and CEO, expressed pride in this milestone, emphasizing the company's commitment to sustainability and innovation. The collaboration with Nikola aligns with Walmart's goal of driving environmental responsibility within the transportation sector. The high-pressure gaseous hydrogen carried by the semi-truck runs through a fuel cell stack, converting it to electricity with water vapor as the only byproduct. This electric power is then used to charge on-board batteries and propel the vehicle through an e-axle with integrated electric motors.
