Dr. Harun Tüysüz, formerly of Germany's Max Planck Institute, has taken the lead at IMDEA Materials Institute to head the newly established Catalysis and Energy Materials (CEM) research group. The group focuses on accelerating catalytic transformations through electrocatalysis and photocatalysis to promote sustainable materials development. Research interests include green hydrogen production, model redox reactions, and polymer recycling using advanced semiconductor materials. Dr. Tüysüz's CHOSEN-CAT project, focusing on halide perovskites, secured significant funding to advance photocatalytic processes. The group aims to utilize solar energy for catalytic transformation in polymer recycling, particularly polyurethane, a widely used plastic. Their goal is to break down polymers into monomers using free solar energy, allowing for the reuse of materials, thus closing the loop in plastics production. Dr. Tüysüz emphasizes the importance of developing active, selective, and environmentally friendly catalytic processes for a sustainable future. Through the development of distinctive halide perovskite structures and the utilization of solar energy in catalytic processes, the CEM group aims to contribute to the advancement of unconventional and economic catalytic processes.
