Appalachia's ARCH2: Pioneering Clean Hydrogen Hub for Economic Growth
Key Ideas
  • The Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) secured a $925m federal funding agreement to drive clean hydrogen initiatives in West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
  • This initiative is part of the US Department of Energy's Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (H2Hubs) program aimed at fostering regional clusters of clean hydrogen producers and consumers.
  • ARCH2's Phase 1, supported by $30m, will kick off in July 2024 and is expected to last 36 months, with future tranches of funding tied to achieving set milestones.
  • In addition to creating thousands of jobs, ARCH2 is committed to ensuring 40% of the benefits reach disadvantaged communities in the region, with various industry partners contributing to its success.
The Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) in Appalachia has inked a major cooperative deal with the US Department of Energy (DOE) to receive up to $925 million in federal funding. The funding aims to catalyze the establishment of a clean hydrogen hub in the region, spanning states like West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. ARCH2 is part of the larger Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (H2Hubs) program initiated by the DOE to build regional ecosystems for clean hydrogen production and usage, thereby laying the groundwork for a national clean hydrogen network in the US. As one of the selected hubs, ARCH2 will receive funding in phases over more than a decade, with an initial $30 million allocated for Phase 1 commencing in July 2024. The remaining funding will be contingent on achieving specific milestones outlined by the DOE. Alongside promoting clean hydrogen, ARCH2 is set to generate numerous employment opportunities, with a commitment to ensuring that 40% of the benefits extend to underprivileged communities in the area. The project partners of ARCH2 include prominent industry players like Air Liquide, CNX Resources, Enbridge Gas Ohio, and Plug Power, among others. The management of ARCH2 will be spearheaded by Battelle, Allegheny Science and Technology, GTI Energy, and TRC Companies, with support from the National Energy Technology Laboratory. Despite being one of the smaller projects in the H2Hubs program, ARCH2 holds significant promise for economic growth and environmental sustainability in Appalachia, aligning with broader national clean energy objectives.
