Baltic Sea Gas TSOs Collaborate for Hydrogen Economy Development
Key Ideas
  • Nine gas transmission system operators around the Baltic Sea signed a MoU to coordinate and facilitate hydrogen infrastructure development and promote hydrogen market growth in the region.
  • The Baltic Sea region's abundant renewable energy resources offer the potential to achieve up to 45% of clean hydrogen production outlined in the REPowerEU plan by 2030.
  • Infrastructure projects like the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor and the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector aim to support the development of a flexible and sustainable pan-European energy system through hydrogen.
  • The collaboration between TSOs in the Baltic Sea region aligns with EU's energy policy objectives to reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels and enhance energy system safety and resilience.
Nine gas transmission system operators (TSOs) around the Baltic Sea have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together in developing hydrogen infrastructure and fostering the hydrogen market in the region. The collaboration involves companies from countries like Poland, Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Sweden, Germany, and Latvia. The goal is to coordinate activities for the development of the hydrogen economy, including transmission and storage infrastructure projects. The Baltic Sea region, known for its renewable energy resources, aims to leverage its potential to produce clean hydrogen and establish a hydrogen market. The TSOs are aligning their efforts with the EU's Baltic energy market interconnection plan (BEMIP) group. Projects like the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor are set to contribute to achieving the REPowerEU plan targets. By working together, the TSOs hope to create a competitive and liquid hydrogen market that supports the EU's climate goals and energy system resilience.
