BMW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation have recently announced a strategic partnership to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology in the automotive industry. The collaboration will see the development of a 'next generation of fuel cell technology,' with plans for BMW to introduce a production fuel cell vehicle by 2028. BMW Chairman Oliver Zipse described this partnership as a significant milestone, emphasizing BMW's aim to offer the first-ever series production fuel cell vehicle from a global premium manufacturer. The partnership between BMW and Toyota is based on their shared passion for cars, belief in technology openness, and a multi-pathway approach to achieving carbon neutrality. This collaboration builds on their previous joint projects, such as the BMW Z4 roadster and Toyota Supra coupe. Both companies are known for their technology-agnostic approach, with BMW having previous experience in hybrids, EVs, and a small-scale pilot project with the iX5 hydrogen fuel cell model. The new hydrogen fuel cell powertrain developed by the two automakers will be utilized in future production vehicles, aiming to reduce costs and enhance economies of scale for both brands. In addition to BMW's upcoming production fuel cell car in 2028, Toyota will also expand its FCEV options for customers, bringing hydrogen mobility closer to reality. The planned BMW fuel cell vehicle will be integrated into the existing portfolio, offering a fuel cell variant within an existing model's powertrain mix.
