Brazil Announces 12 Low-Carbon Hydrogen Hub Projects for Industrial Decarbonization
Key Ideas
- The Ministry of Mines and Energy in Brazil has selected 12 low-carbon hydrogen hub projects for industrial decarbonization.
- Projects involve production of hydrogen from various sources like electricity, wind, solar, ethanol, and biomass, with capacities ranging from 1,000 to 350,000 tons per year.
- Selected companies will further detail their projects for potential allocation of resources from the Climate Investments Funds for Industry Decarbonization (CIF-ID).
- The projects aim to use hydrogen for green steel, aluminum, fertilizers, refining processes, and e-methanol production, indicating a positive step towards industrial decarbonization in Brazil.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) in Brazil recently announced the selection of 12 low-carbon hydrogen hub projects aimed at industrial decarbonization in the country. These projects were presented by various companies, including Petrobras, EDP Renováveis Brasil, and Eletrobras. The proposals cover the production of hydrogen using different sources such as electricity from the National Interconnected System (SIN), wind, solar, ethanol, and biomass. The production capacities of these projects range from 1,000 to 350,000 tons of hydrogen per year. Out of a total of 70 proposals received from 20 states across Brazil, these 12 projects were chosen to move forward to the next stage. The selected companies will have the opportunity to compete for resources from the Climate Investments Funds – Industry Decarbonization CIF-ID, an international fund in which Brazil is participating. The National Secretary of Energy Transition and Planning of the MME, Thiago Barral, highlighted the potential of these low-carbon hydrogen hubs in inducing industrial decarbonization in Brazil. The projects aim to utilize hydrogen for various purposes including green steel, aluminum, fertilizers, refining processes, and e-methanol production. This selection of projects represents a significant step towards a cleaner and more sustainable industrial sector in Brazil.
