On 27 April, the Huadian Delingha PEM Water Electrolysis for Hydrogen Production Demonstration Project in Delingha City, Qinghai Province, successfully achieved commercial operation and hydrogen delivery. This milestone marks a significant breakthrough in China's green hydrogen production technology, particularly in high-altitude and cold regions. The project, with a hydrogen production scale of 600 Nm³/h and an annual capacity of 153 mt, involved a total investment of RMB 150 million.
The initiative adopted internationally advanced PEM water electrolysis technology, ensuring high hydrogen purity, low energy consumption, and fast response speed. Additionally, it developed an innovative "PV-hydrogen-storage" collaborative control system to address extreme environmental conditions in Delingha. The project's construction, which began in November 2022 and concluded with commercial operation in April 2025, included the establishment of a hydrogen refuelling station equipped with megawatt-class PEM water electrolysis and hydrogen filling systems.
The project's significance lies in promoting the energy transition towards green hydrogen, supporting the "dual carbon" goals, and driving industrial development in the region. It also addresses consumption challenges in north-west China by overcoming obstacles related to green electricity consumption and industrial hydrogen usage. Furthermore, the project contributed to technological innovation by resolving localization issues for key materials and equipment, demonstrating the scientific and industrial advancements in green hydrogen production. This achievement showcases the potential for sustainable development and economic growth through green energy initiatives.
