Cemex Ventures, Cemex’s corporate venture capital (CVC) and open innovation unit, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with HiiROC, a British hydrogen company, to deploy hydrogen at an industrial scale at its Rugby cement plant in the United Kingdom. This collaboration is a significant step in the construction industry's efforts towards decarbonisation. HiiROC's innovative Thermal Plasma Electrolysis (TPE) process allows for the production of carbon-neutral hydrogen with reduced energy consumption compared to traditional methods, thus aiding Cemex in lowering its carbon emissions in cement production. The project aims to leverage hydrogen as an alternative energy source to reduce the sector's reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate CO2 emissions. The partnership signifies Cemex's commitment to industry transformation and sustainability by investing in new technologies like HiiROC's hydrogen production. Gonzalo Galindo, Head of Cemex Ventures, highlighted the potential of hydrogen in significantly reducing CO2 emissions and aligning with Cemex's goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The collaboration with HiiROC is part of Cemex's strategic roadmap for Future in Action, a sustainability and decarbonisation program focused on achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
