Lhyfe, a specialist energy production company, and German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn have joined forces to drive climate-neutral trains using green hydrogen. Lhyfe has constructed a hydrogen production plant in DB Energie’s Tübingen innovation hub, capable of producing up to 30 tons of green hydrogen annually, equivalent to one megawatt of electrolysis capacity. Deutsche Bahn, at the forefront of environmental initiatives, is focusing on decarbonisation within the rail industry through projects like the 'H2goesRail' initiative. The partnership aims to introduce a climate-neutral hydrogen train on a test route in Baden-Württemberg, showcasing the economic viability of hydrogen solutions for sustainable transportation. Lhyfe, claiming to be a global pioneer in green hydrogen production, plans to operate the plant using green electricity from Deutsche Bahn's portfolio. The collaboration also seeks to perfect a largely autonomous hydrogen fuel system with the goal of connecting hydrogen production to a mass-scale filling station. This complex commissioning process involves production, compression, storage, and refueling. Lhyfe is optimistic about commercializing the perfected system not only for Deutsche Bahn but also for future customers, with a vision to establish a significant presence in the mobility and industry sector.
