Ecopetrol's Reficar Refinery in Cartagena Implements Major Environmental Upgrades
Key Ideas
  • Refinería de Cartagena SAS (Reficar) begins a 50-day maintenance involving the replacement of catalyst in hydrocracking, hydrogen production, and sulfur recovery units.
  • The maintenance aims to ensure fuel production meets Colombian government standards and includes upgrades for improved operational efficiency and safety.
  • Reficar's environmental initiatives include a solar farm, carbon capture projects, water reuse, green hydrogen production, and testing for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel production.
  • Ecopetrol's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 is reflected in Reficar's efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and explore sustainable energy solutions at the Cartagena refinery.
Ecopetrol's subsidiary Refinería de Cartagena SAS (Reficar) has initiated a 50-day scheduled maintenance at its 210,000-b/d refinery in Cartagena, Colombia. The maintenance involves replacing catalyst in key units like hydrocracking, hydrogen production, and sulfur recovery to ensure compliance with fuel-quality regulations. This $243 million investment includes general maintenance and upgrades to enhance operational efficiency. Despite unit shutdowns, transportation fuel supplies to Colombian markets will not be affected. Reficar's focus on environmental sustainability includes the construction of Latin America's first solar farm within the refinery, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 21,000 tonnes/year. The refinery has also implemented projects like carbon capture, water reuse, and green hydrogen production to enhance its green initiatives. Further plans involve testing for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel production, as well as exploring petrochemical production from naphtha and hydrogen. These efforts align with Ecopetrol's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, emphasizing the refinery's commitment to environmental responsibility. Previous energy efficiency projects have already reduced CO2 emissions by 274,000 tpy. The ongoing upgrades at Reficar's Cartagena refinery signify a significant step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly operation in the region.
