Essar Group is embarking on a significant journey towards sustainable energy with a massive investment of Rs 30,000 crore in a green hydrogen plant in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This ambitious project over the next four years showcases Essar's strong commitment to green energy as a key element of its growth strategy. Prashant Ruia, director of Essar Capital, outlined the conglomerate's comprehensive decarbonization plan, which includes projects in multiple countries and industries. The plan involves decarbonizing Essar's UK oil refinery, establishing a green steel plant in Saudi Arabia, creating an LNG and electric ecosystem for long-haul heavy trucks, and venturing into mining critical minerals essential for electric vehicle batteries, solar panels, and wind turbine magnets. Essar Future Energy, leading the green hydrogen project, aims to build a 1 GW hydrogen capacity at the Jamnagar site, producing 1 million tonnes per annum of green molecules using renewable energy for electrolysis. The project underscores the versatility of hydrogen as a zero-emission fuel for various applications. While hydrogen transportation poses challenges, Essar is exploring innovative approaches like converting it to green ammonia for easier shipping, potentially cutting costs. In addition to green hydrogen initiatives, Essar is expanding coal-based electricity generation while boosting renewable energy projects. Essar Power plans to increase its Salaya-DevBhoomi Dwarka thermal power plant's capacity by 1,600 MW to meet Gujarat's energy needs and aims to scale up renewable energy capacity to 10,000 MW in the next few years. In the green mobility sector, Essar is developing LNG and electric ecosystems for heavy trucks to reduce emissions substantially. With a fleet of LNG-powered trucks and plans for expanding LNG supply networks, Essar aims to make a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions and harmful pollutants. The company's focus on sustainability extends to gas production, with Essar Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Limited planning to upscale gas output significantly and explore shale gas potential. Internationally, Essar's investments in decarbonization projects in the UK and Saudi Arabia underline its commitment to driving the global energy transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon future.
