French start-up Gen-Hy has received a substantial €100 million public aid contract from the French government to establish the country's first AEM membranes and electrolysers factory for the production of green hydrogen in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. This project, part of the Hy2Move Hydrogen Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), aims to reduce France's strategic dependence on rare materials by supporting the development of high-efficiency electrolyser technology. The Gen-Hy plant, in partnership with Eiffage Energie Systèmes and Saint-Gobain Solutions Haute Performance, is poised to become a key player in renewable green hydrogen production to aid in the decarbonization of industries, mobility, and energy sectors. Scheduled for commissioning in Q1 2026, the plant is expected to create 150 jobs initially, with projections to reach 250 jobs in the long term. The innovative AEM electrolysers developed by Gen-Hy utilize a patented technology that enables the production of low-cost, high-purity green hydrogen through electrolysis, with efficiency targets set at 85% initially and 90% in later phases. This initiative not only contributes to the green hydrogen market but also aligns with the goals of the European Commission to promote innovation and decarbonization in strategic industrial fields through transnational projects like the Hy2Move Hydrogen IPCEI.
