Quantum Technology from Squamish and NTE Discovery Park in Campbell River have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a green hydrogen production plant. The plant will initially produce 15 metric tons per day of green hydrogen gas and liquid to power transportation modes like ferries, buses, and cars in Vancouver Island and Powell River, aiming for zero CO2 emissions. The hydrogen will be processed using renewable electricity, contributing to reducing the effects of climate change. The project also includes blending hydrogen with natural gas to reduce carbon footprint without infrastructure changes. The plan envisions future expansion to deliver green liquid hydrogen to Vancouver, Victoria, and potentially for use in aviation. The location in Discovery Park offers an ideal infrastructure with electricity, water availability, and port access. Further phases will involve detailed planning and engagement with stakeholders, including First Nations. Quantum Technology is in discussions with Squamish for a hydrogen facility as well. Despite the premium cost of transitioning to hydrogen, the long-term benefits of zero CO2 emissions and environmental sustainability are emphasized.
