Greenko’s Mega Renewable Energy Project in Andhra Pradesh: A Step Towards Carbon-Free Future
Key Ideas
  • Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan visited Greenko’s Integrated Renewable Energy Project in Andhra Pradesh, a large-scale project combining solar, wind, and pumped hydropower with significant storage capacity.
  • The project, with an investment of $4.2 billion, aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a global hub for carbon-free energy and support industries like green steel and green hydrogen production.
  • Upon completion, the project is expected to catalyze economic growth, reduce CO2 emissions by 3.3 million tonnes per year, and contribute to Greenko's strategy of developing multiple pumped storage projects across India.
  • Greenko, owned by GIC, ADIA, Orix Corp., and founders, has a 10 GW renewable energy capacity across India, with plans to operate 50 GWh of storage by 2025 and a total of 100 GWh in the future.
Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Pawan Kalyan, visited Greenko’s Integrated Renewable Energy Project in Pinnapuram, which is touted as the world’s first and largest GW-scale integrated renewable energy generation and storage project. The project combines 3,500 MW of solar, 1,214 MW of wind, and 1,680 MW of pumped hydropower generation with a substantial pumped storage capacity of 10,080 MWh per day in a single cycle. The project, with an investment of $4.2 billion, including $1.2 billion in pumped storage creation, aims to position the region as a global hub for carbon-free energy and provide support to industries like green steel and green hydrogen production. During the visit, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan praised Greenko's efforts and assured full government support for the project's success. Anil Chalamalasetty, Group CEO & MD of Greenko, emphasized the economic benefits, potential employment opportunities, and the significant reduction of CO2 emissions, projected at 3.3 million tonnes per year upon project completion. This initiative aligns with Greenko's strategy to develop multiple pumped storage projects across India to aid in decarbonization. Greenko, a key player in energy transition and decarbonization solutions, currently boasts a renewable energy capacity of 10 GW across wind, solar, and hydro resources in 15 Indian states. The company plans to have 50 GWh of storage operational by 2025 and aims for a total of 100 GWh in the future, integrated through a cloud-based platform. Majority-owned by GIC and ADIA, along with Orix Corp. and its founders, Greenko's vision is to leverage renewable energy as a mainstream energy source in the grid for a sustainable future.
