Groundbreaking Green Hydrogen Project in Visakhapatnam Promotes Water Efficiency
Key Ideas
  • NETRA, NTPC's R&D wing, is establishing a pioneering 1 TPD seawater-to-green hydrogen plant at NTPC Simhadri near Visakhapatnam.
  • The project incorporates a novel low-carbon desalination system, utilizing waste heat from the thermal power plant's flue gas for cost-effective hydrogen production.
  • With India's water scarcity challenges, the Government is emphasizing technologies that leverage low-grade water sources like seawater for green hydrogen.
  • NTPC Green Energy Limited, a subsidiary, is driving initiatives to support the National Green Hydrogen Mission and promote sustainable energy solutions.
NETRA, the R&D arm of NTPC, is embarking on an innovative venture by establishing a 1 TPD seawater-to-green hydrogen plant at NTPC Simhadri near Visakhapatnam. This cutting-edge project features a unique low-carbon desalination system that repurposes waste heat from the thermal power plant's flue gas, ensuring efficient conversion of seawater into hydrogen-grade water. Water efficiency is highlighted as crucial, as the production of 1 kilogram of hydrogen typically requires 12-13 kilograms of purified water. Given India's water scarcity issues, the Government is focusing on technologies that can make use of low-grade water sources such as seawater and wastewater for hydrogen generation. NTPC Green Energy Limited, a subsidiary of NTPC, is actively engaged in various initiatives to align with the goals of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, thus reinforcing the country's dedication to sustainable energy solutions.
