Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has laid the foundation for Hyundai Motor India Limited’s Hydrogen Innovation Centre in Chennai, established in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and Guidance Tamil Nadu. The centre, set to commence operations by 2026, is located on a 65,000 square foot site within the IIT Madras Thaiyur campus. It will focus on research and development in hydrogen technology, specifically green hydrogen production, fuel cell technology, and hydrogen mobility solutions. Supported by an investment of INR 180 crore from Hyundai, the centre aims to make significant strides in promoting hydrogen as a clean, emission-free energy source. The centre will house advanced facilities like an electrolyser test rig for green hydrogen generation, fuel cell fabrication lines, and a hydrogen refuelling station to support the localisation of hydrogen technology manufacturing and supply chains. This initiative is a crucial step towards reducing Tamil Nadu's carbon footprint and positioning the state as a leader in sustainable and alternative fuel technologies. By driving technological advancements and fostering a skilled workforce for India's emerging hydrogen economy, the Hydrogen Innovation Centre is expected to have a positive impact on the state's economic development and automotive innovation.
