India's SECI Launches SIGHT Scheme to Drive Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • SECI to commence selection process for Green Hydrogen Producers under the SIGHT Scheme to establish production facilities in India.
  • Scheme aligns with MNRE guidelines and National Green Hydrogen Mission's Component II, focusing on incentivizing Green Hydrogen production.
  • Initiative aims to boost India's sustainable energy production capacity, promote cleaner energy alternatives, and reduce carbon emissions.
  • Tender documents to be released soon with eligibility criteria, application procedures, and project requirements for interested producers.
Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) has announced the initiation of the selection process for Green Hydrogen Producers under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme. This scheme, established by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), targets the development of production facilities in India dedicated to generating Green Hydrogen and its derivatives, with an annual production capacity goal of 4,50,000 metric tonnes. SECI's notification indicates that the tender documents will closely adhere to the Scheme Guidelines issued by MNRE on July 3, 2024, falling within the framework of the National Green Hydrogen Mission's Component II, specifically emphasizing incentivizing Green Hydrogen production. The objective of this initiative is to enhance India's capacity for sustainable energy production by facilitating the establishment of dedicated facilities for Green Hydrogen, aligning with the government's strategic agenda to promote cleaner energy alternatives and mitigate carbon emissions. SECI anticipates that the forthcoming tender documents will offer detailed information on eligibility criteria, application processes, and project prerequisites for interested producers. The selection process is deemed crucial in identifying entities dedicated to advancing India's capabilities in green energy technology and nurturing a conducive ecosystem for Green Hydrogen production. This development underscores India's commitment to expedite its transition towards renewable energy sources and fulfill its climate objectives under the Paris Agreement. Additionally, it reflects the global emphasis on leveraging hydrogen as a clean and versatile energy carrier to propel sustainable development in diverse industrial sectors.
