Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have introduced a novel hydrogen production system that addresses the limitations of current green hydrogen production methods. The system is based on a water-splitting process using a water-soluble electrolyte and a high-performance zinc-air battery, offering stable hydrogen production while minimizing the risk of fire. Hydrogen, a key raw material for high value-added products and a clean fuel with high energy density, has been hindered by carbon dioxide emissions in conventional production methods. The new system aims to leverage air cells to produce hydrogen through water splitting, but without the need for precious metal catalysts, ensuring sustained performance during long-term operation. The research team developed a catalyst material named G-SHELL that enables effective oxygen and hydrogen generation, as well as oxygen reduction, achieving superior energy density and output characteristics compared to existing batteries. This material, grown on graphene oxide, exhibits remarkable stability under repeated charging and discharging cycles. By employing a zinc-air battery operated with a water-soluble electrolyte, the system offers a safe and eco-friendly approach to hydrogen production. Professor Jeung Ku Kang highlighted that this innovative system represents a significant advancement in green hydrogen production, overcoming existing limitations and promising a sustainable energy future.
