Kellogg's has successfully conducted a hydrogen-fuelled manufacturing demonstration at one of its UK factories, making it the first food manufacturer in the country to produce cereals using this environmentally friendly method. The initiative was part of the HyNet Industrial Fuel Switching programme, funded by the UK government's Industrial Fuel Switching Competition. By replacing fuel gas with hydrogen, Kellogg's managed to power the toasting oven and produce cereals for popular brands like Corn Flakes and Special K. This milestone follows Kellanova UK, Kellogg's manufacturer, receiving £3 million in funding from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero in 2023. The demonstration not only highlighted the role of hydrogen in decarbonisation but also provided valuable learning opportunities for the facility's employees. The company's vice president of manufacturing, Sam Bistiaux, emphasized the importance of investing in low-carbon fuels and the potential transformative impact of such technology. Kellogg's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions aligns with its 'Better Days' promise, with a focus on achieving a 63% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 across its European operations. The successful demonstration received praise from David Parkin, chair of the HyNet Alliance, who lauded the positive impact of hydrogen investment on industry and the environment. The company plans to share insights and best practices from this initiative to inspire other businesses to take steps towards a more sustainable future.
