The Kerala Cabinet has approved draft guidelines for the development of floating solar power plants to address the state's increasing electricity consumption. With Kerala heavily relying on seasonal hydropower, the new guidelines aim to diversify the energy sources. Targeting 3 GW of floating solar capacity, the state plans to utilize reservoirs, abandoned mining pits, and water bodies for power generation. ANERT will supervise the implementation to ensure efficient approvals and integration of energy storage solutions, with a focus on potential green hydrogen production. The structured framework includes a single-window clearance system to expedite project execution and encourage participation from both government and private sectors. By establishing state and district-level committees, the government aims to streamline policy decisions and project approvals. Additionally, the projects will follow the Build-Own-Operate model and integrate energy storage to increase reliability. The initiative aligns with Kerala's long-term sustainability goals and commitment to renewable energy, aiming to reduce dependency on conventional power sources. The plan also includes utilizing surplus energy for green hydrogen production, showcasing Kerala's leadership in renewable energy innovation. By 2025, Kerala targets meeting 40% of its electricity demand from renewables through various initiatives, including floating solar, hydropower projects, and rooftop solar installations.
