Kuwait Petroleum Corp. (KPC) has outlined an ambitious plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, a decade ahead of the country's target. The strategy involves a shift towards LNG, reduced flaring of gas, renewable energy utilization, and a significant transformation of the Al-Zour refinery. With a budget of $110 billion allocated for this transition, Kuwait aims to enhance its sustainable crude production capacity to 4 million barrels per day by 2035 through 2040. Notably, KPC plans to play a key role in global energy supply while maintaining low emissions intensity. The country is also focusing on new energy initiatives such as deploying 18,000 electric vehicle charging points, expanding plastics recycling capacity, increasing biofuels production, and venturing into green hydrogen production by 2050. Additionally, KPC is actively exploring renewable energy sources to achieve 17 GW of capacity by 2050. Kuwait's status as the largest LNG importer in the Middle East underscores its commitment to cleaner energy. The country plans to leverage LNG for power generation, with recent agreements to secure additional supply. Furthermore, efforts are underway to reduce gas flaring significantly and increase efficiency in refining processes. KPC has set ambitious targets to eliminate routine flaring by 2030 and implement carbon capture solutions.
