Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has issued a ¥10bn ($67m) bond to finance its energy transition initiatives, focusing on low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production. The bond will be utilized for projects related to hydrogen and ammonia power generation, decarbonisation of infrastructure, and the establishment of a hydrogen solutions ecosystem. MHI's goal is to promote decarbonisation, electrification, and intelligence in its existing businesses through sustainable financing methods like transition bonds and green bonds. The bond proceeds will also support the development of solar power, biogas production, nuclear energy systems, and synthetic fuels like sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). MHI's commitment to energy transition is highlighted by agreements with partners like the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to explore blending hydrogen with natural gas and supplying hydrogen-related technologies globally. In addition, MHI has been actively involved in projects such as providing hydrogen-ready gas turbines to Utah in the US for a 30% hydrogen fuel blend startup in 2025. The company has also completed the construction of a hydrogen-powered engine generator in Japan for in-house testing, showcasing its advancements in high-pressure hydrogen technology. Overall, MHI's endeavors in the field of hydrogen and energy transition signify a positive step towards sustainable and decarbonized energy solutions.
