Norwegian company Nel and South Korean power generation company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) have entered into a collaboration to develop clean hydrogen production technology. Leveraging Nel's expertise in alkaline electrolysis and KHNP's experience in nuclear power, the partnership aims to explore and expand into global clean hydrogen markets. KHNP, specializing in nuclear and hydroelectric energy in South Korea, is actively involved in a nuclear clean hydrogen production demonstration project. In addition, KHNP has partnered with U.S.-based FuelCell Energy to work on advanced energy solutions combining FuelCell Energy's solid oxide electrolysis hydrogen platform with KHNP's nuclear power plants. Nel, on the other hand, is working on concrete bids and commercial projects, including containerized proton exchange membrane (PEM) systems. The company remains dedicated to developing electrolyzers for renewable hydrogen production. However, Nel recently decided to halt production at its alkaline electrolyzer facility in Norway due to lower-than-expected order intake. Despite this, Nel continues to focus on the development of current and next-generation technology platforms. Overall, the collaboration between Nel and KHNP signifies a positive step towards advancing clean hydrogen production technology, with both companies exploring new opportunities and partnerships in the hydrogen energy sector.
