Nel Partners with KHNP for Clean Hydrogen Production: A Nuclear-Powered Alliance
Key Ideas
  • Nel and KHNP have signed an MOU to combine Nel's alkaline electrolysis with nuclear power for clean hydrogen production, aiming to expand globally.
  • KHNP is currently exploring pink hydrogen, powered by nuclear electricity, and is conducting a demonstration project in South Korea.
  • Nel's decision to pause alkaline electrolyser production in Herøya comes amidst declining sales, but the company is looking to launch a new platform soon.
  • Nuclear power offers a potential pathway for zero-carbon hydrogen production, addressing the intermittency issues faced by renewable energy sources.
Norwegian hydrogen company Nel has entered into a partnership with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) to explore the combination of Nel's alkaline electrolysis technology with nuclear power for clean hydrogen production. KHNP is currently researching pink hydrogen, which involves using nuclear electricity for electrolytic production, and is in the process of conducting a demonstration project. While specific details of the partnership are scarce, both companies aim to expand into the global clean hydrogen market. Nel recently announced a halt in alkaline electrolyser production at its flagship 1GW plant in Herøya due to declining sales. Despite this setback, Nel is optimistic about launching a new pressurised alkaline platform in the near future. Alkaline electrolysis faces challenges with renewable energy due to its slower response times compared to PEM systems, making it difficult to efficiently match energy supply with fluctuating inputs. The collaboration with nuclear power presents a promising solution to produce zero-carbon hydrogen using mature electrolysis technology. Nuclear power's baseload nature could potentially support large-scale hydrogen production. However, concerns regarding nuclear safety and cost persist within the industry. Nel recently received a repeat order from Samsung C&T Corporation and Engineering Construction Group for a 10MW alkaline system to support pink hydrogen production in South Korea. The partnership between Nel and KHNP signifies a step towards leveraging nuclear power for sustainable hydrogen production, addressing challenges in the energy market and exploring innovative solutions for the industry.
