NewHydrogen's ThermoLoop™ Collaboration with UC Santa Barbara for Cost-Effective Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • NewHydrogen, Inc. is collaborating with UC Santa Barbara to develop ThermoLoop™, a thermochemical process for producing green hydrogen using water and heat rather than electricity, aiming to significantly reduce production costs.
  • The UCSB team has made progress in designing a reactor test stand, identifying new materials, and understanding hydrogen generation mechanisms, validating the foundational science behind ThermoLoop™.
  • Future plans include exploring novel material systems, upgrading experimental test stands, and developing a process model for a technoeconomic analysis to optimize performance and reduce energy input.
  • The ultimate goal of the collaboration is to deliver the world's cheapest green hydrogen, contributing to the advancement of the green hydrogen economy and reducing reliance on limited resources like coal, oil, and natural gas.
NewHydrogen, Inc. recently provided an update on its innovative ThermoLoop™ technology in collaboration with the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) to revolutionize the production of green hydrogen. The company aims to reduce production costs by using a novel low-cost thermochemical process that utilizes heat instead of electricity to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. This approach is expected to significantly lower the cost of green hydrogen, which is currently dominated by the expensive process of using green electricity. Since its inception in August 2023, the collaboration has achieved notable milestones, including designing a reactor test stand, identifying promising materials, and validating the science behind ThermoLoop™. The UCSB team plans to further explore material systems, enhance testing capabilities, and conduct a technoeconomic analysis to optimize the efficiency of hydrogen production. NewHydrogen's CEO, Steve Hill, expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the UCSB team and highlighted the importance of their efforts in advancing the green hydrogen economy. By leveraging this breakthrough technology, the collaboration aims to usher in a more cost-effective and sustainable method of producing green hydrogen, reducing the dependency on environmentally harmful resources like coal, oil, and natural gas.
