The Northern Territory Government has recently signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) to strengthen economic and strategic trade ties. These agreements underline the significant value of $7.7 billion in goods exported from the territory to Japan in the 2022-23 period. Chief Minister Eva Lawler highlighted that enhancing collaboration with key trading partners like Japan will boost the emerging critical minerals sector in the Northern Territory, leading to more job opportunities. The first MoU, signed by Lawler and JOGMEC Executive Vice President Hiroyuki Mori, focuses on cooperation in various energy sectors such as natural gas, carbon capture, storage, and hydrogen production. The second MoU, signed by Minister for Mining Mark Monaghan and Executive Vice President Hiroshi Kubota, aims to strengthen collaboration in critical mineral supply chains. Monaghan expressed that these agreements will increase the government's ability to develop resources responsibly and efficiently. The Northern Territory Government views these MoUs as pivotal in positioning the region as a key player in the transition to renewables and critical minerals supply chains both locally and globally. The mining sector in the Northern Territory, currently valued at $4.38 billion, provides employment to over 5,300 individuals. JOGMEC, as a Japanese government institution established in 2004, is dedicated to oil, gas, and metals. The agreements signify a positive outlook for economic growth, job creation, and sustainable resource management in the region.
