The Northern Territory Government has taken significant steps to fortify economic and strategic trade relations with Japan by signing two memorandum of understanding’s (MoUs) with the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). These agreements aim to facilitate collaboration in the exploration, extraction, processing, and supply of critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, lithium, graphite, and rare earth elements. The first MoU focuses on cooperation in energy sectors like natural gas, carbon capture and storage, and hydrogen production, signed by NT Chief Minister Eva Lawler and JOGMEC executive vice president Hiroyuki MORI. Lawler emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with Japan to drive the Territory's economy and create more opportunities for its residents. The second MoU emphasizes greater collaboration within critical mineral supply chains and was signed by NT Mining Minister Mark Monaghan and JOGMEC executive vice president Hiroshi KUBOTA. Monaghan highlighted the significance of NT's critical minerals in the global energy transition and expressed optimism about the partnership with JOGMEC. These agreements not only aim to boost the region's critical minerals sector but also to establish NT as a reliable partner for Japan. Additionally, previous agreements with South Korea showcase NT's commitment to fostering international partnerships for mutual benefits and economic growth in the mining sector. The collaborations with both Japan and South Korea demonstrate NT's strategic initiatives to enhance its economic prospects and strengthen its position in the global resource industry.
