His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman visited Antwerp, Belgium, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Belgian Hydrogen Council and Hydrom Oman. The agreement focuses on enhancing collaboration in the green hydrogen sector by promoting joint research, industrial cooperation, and developing a regulatory framework to support hydrogen import, distribution, and infrastructure. The partnership builds on previous agreements like the Hyport Duqm Project, which plans to produce green hydrogen and ammonia using wind and solar energy. With key players like DEME, OQ, and BP involved, the project aims to reach a capacity of 1.3 GW initially, expanding to 2.7 GW later. The Port of Duqm will serve as the hub for exporting green hydrogen to European and Asian markets, positioning Oman as a strategic player in the global hydrogen economy. Belgium aims to become a gateway for green hydrogen into the EU, utilizing its developed hydrogen infrastructure, while Oman leverages its renewable energy resources to play a crucial role in the green hydrogen supply chain. The MoU signifies a significant step in both countries' commitment to sustainable and clean energy solutions. Key statements from Tom Hautekiet and Salim Al Aufi highlight the potential for innovation and growth in the hydrogen economy and the milestone achieved in energy cooperation between Oman and Belgium. Oman's vision to produce 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030 and attract substantial investments in the sector solidifies its position as a global leader in green hydrogen. The MoU further cements Oman and Belgium's economic ties, strengthening bilateral trade and opening new opportunities in the hydrogen supply chain. As the partnership evolves, it is expected to drive technological advancements, foreign investments, and support global energy transitions, creating a ripple effect of growth and innovation in the green hydrogen sector.
