OMV Petrom, a leading energy company in Romania, has announced a substantial investment of approximately €750 million at the Petrobrazi refinery. The investment aims to position Petrobrazi as the first major producer of sustainable fuels in the region. This transformation involves building a SAF/HVO facility, along with two green hydrogen production units that will be utilized in the production of biofuels. The CEO of OMV Petrom, Christina Verchere, highlighted the company's commitment to decarbonizing transport in Romania and the broader region, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy projects. The executive board member responsible for refining and marketing, Radu Caprau, underlined the role of biofuels and electro-mobility in achieving low carbon transport and meeting the increasing demand for sustainable products. The investment includes a €560 million allocation for the SAF/HVO facility, which will produce biofuels and by-products like bio-naphtha and bio-LPG. The installation's flexibility allows for adjusting the product mix based on market demands and available feedstock. Additionally, the €190 million investment in green hydrogen production units, supported by European funds, will enable the integration of green hydrogen into sustainable fuels, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The initiative at Petrobrazi represents a crucial step towards a lower carbon future, emphasizing product certainty and reduced carbon emissions for customers while positioning Romania as a hub for sustainable fuel production.
