The Belledune Port Authority (BPA) is actively working towards establishing a new, clean energy economy in northern New Brunswick. At the 2023 Annual General Meeting, the BPA announced its shift away from fossil fuel-based heavy industry towards green energy and low-carbon practices. With funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Port has initiated planning studies for green hydrogen production on its lands. The Port of Belledune has been proactive in promoting itself as a hub for clean energy, as evidenced by its participation in the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam. Additionally, the Province of New Brunswick has taken significant steps by amending the Electricity Act and introducing a hydrogen strategy to support a sustainable hydrogen economy. In line with its vision for industrial revitalization, the Port has expanded its operations through projects like the National Trade Corridors initiative. Furthermore, the establishment of a community-led advisory committee underscores the Port's commitment to engaging stakeholders in green energy development. This collaborative platform allows for the exchange of ideas, identification of growth opportunities, and overcoming potential challenges. Overall, the Port of Belledune's strategic initiatives reflect a positive outlook towards clean energy, economic growth, and community involvement, positioning it as a key player in advancing towards a sustainable future.
