South Africa's Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) has entered a new phase after the U.S. withdrew its support earlier this year. However, the partnership continues to impact the country's progress in its energy transition and cleantech development with additional funding from existing members. The JETP, through international partnerships, plays a crucial role in institutional reform, private sector mobilization, capacity building, and technological innovation within the cleantech sector. The partnership has announced high-level financial support, facilitating policy shifts and technology scaling. Initiatives like the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET IP) and licensing exemptions for embedded generation are paving the way for private investments in renewables. The partnership has also engaged with multilateral development banks for grid and energy storage reforms, improving reliability and enabling renewable integration. Additionally, the JETP has attracted international and bilateral private sector collaborations, scaling renewables generation and fostering innovation in mobility, battery production, and green hydrogen technology. South Africa's geographic suitability for green hydrogen production has led to coordinated international efforts aimed at boosting domestic production and positioning the country as a global export hub. Various partnerships and initiatives, such as the $1B SA-H2 Fund and the German-South African Hydrogen Task Force, are driving investment in green hydrogen technology. Despite facing implementation challenges, the JETP's expanded pipeline of projects showcases significant progress in driving cleantech innovation and investment in South Africa.
