A team of South Korean scientists at Pohang University of Science & Technology (POSTECH) has made a groundbreaking advancement in hydrogen production by utilizing household microwave technology. In the pursuit of sustainable energy, they developed a method that significantly reduces the energy required for the thermochemical reaction to release hydrogen. By using microwaves, the team managed to produce hydrogen at 600℃, a substantial reduction from the traditional 1,500°C. The microwave energy replaced 75% of the thermal energy needed for the reaction, accelerating the process by creating essential material defects or oxygen deficiencies. This breakthrough, published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry, is considered a major achievement in the field. Professor Hyungyu Jin, a co-lead author of the study, highlighted the potential of this research to revolutionize hydrogen production technologies and facilitate the development of new materials optimized for microwave-driven processes. The implications of this discovery extend to faster, more cost-effective hydrogen production, offering promising prospects for a sustainable future and the global transition to net-zero emissions.
