Spain is on track to become a leader in green hydrogen production, with Rystad Energy forecasting that the country may achieve 5 GW of green electrolyser capacity by 2030. Surpassing Germany, Spain aims to be the largest green hydrogen producer in the EU by the same year. The consultancy highlighted Spain's ideal conditions for renewable energy and supportive policies, making it a cost-effective region for green hydrogen production. Despite having set ambitious targets, Spain still requires additional subsidies to meet its goal of 11 GW capacity. The European Hydrogen Bank's support, coupled with Spain's significant aid, including funding from the EU's IPCEI Hy2Use program and for developing renewable hydrogen hubs, are crucial. While most Spanish projects are considered low risk and progressing well with government support, the country needs more financial backing to achieve its targets. Notably, Spain's renewable boom has led to a drop in daily power prices, making it the cheapest month in history. With Spain's commitment to double its renewables fleet to 160 GW by 2030, the country's green hydrogen ambitions align with the EU's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 through the production of 10m tonnes domestically by 2030.
