Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has introduced a new subsidy program to promote the establishment of valleys or clusters for renewable hydrogen production. With a significant budget of €1.2 billion, the program aims to fund industrial-scale projects that meet specific criteria. These criteria include securing commitments from customers to purchase a substantial portion of the hydrogen produced, ensuring the hydrogen is renewable according to EU guidelines for electrolysis, and having an electrolysis capacity exceeding 100 MW. The initiative prioritizes projects that demonstrate not only technical feasibility but also positive environmental and local socioeconomic impacts. Additionally, the program emphasizes projects that leverage economy of scale and has received approval from the European Commission. The subsidies awarded will be used to cover various investment costs related to hydrogen production, storage, and renewable electricity generation. A competitive bidding process will be initiated soon, managed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving, with winners expected to be announced in 2025 and 2026. Several projects are already underway in Spain, such as HyVal, Fertiberia's renewable hydrogen project, and Cepsa's hydrogen parks. These initiatives are part of the broader effort to advance renewable hydrogen production in the country and contribute to decarbonization efforts.
