The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is taking a bold step towards sustainable energy practices by initiating a project to produce green hydrogen at the Port of Colombo. This project, part of SLPA's Green Energy Initiative Programme, involves harnessing solar energy for the production of hydrogen, a clean alternative fuel. The move not only supports global green energy objectives but also positions the Port of Colombo as a pioneering entity in adopting alternative fuels. At the Colombo International Maritime & Logistics Conference 2024, SLPA's Managing Director, Eng. Ganaka Hemachandra, emphasized the pressing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in port operations. He highlighted the significant energy consumption of the port, accounting for 25% of Colombo's total energy usage, equivalent to about 50 MW. By focusing on green hydrogen production, SLPA aims to address this substantial energy demand while contributing to environmental sustainability. The project signifies a crucial shift towards cleaner energy sources in the maritime industry.
