Sweco to Partner with Helen on Revolutionary Green Hydrogen Facility in Helsinki
Key Ideas
  • Sweco appointed by Helen to oversee the development of the 3H2 Helsinki Hydrogen Hub featuring a 3MW pilot plant.
  • Hydrogen production set to start in 2026 targeting heavy-duty transportation with surplus heat integrated into district heating, enhancing efficiency.
  • Helen emphasizes the significance of hydrogen in their new strategy, aligning with Finland's aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.
  • Finland's government supports increasing green hydrogen production to 10% of the EU's total by 2030, with current consumption expected to double in the next decade.
Sweco has been selected by Helen, a Finnish energy company, to oversee the development of the 3H2 Helsinki Hydrogen Hub in Helsinki, Finland. This project, marking Helen's entry into hydrogen production, will include a pilot plant with a capacity of around 3MW. Sweco's role as the EPCM partner involves managing the project's infrastructure planning, including architecture, structural engineering, and overseeing the plant's construction. The hydrogen production at the site is slated to begin in 2026, focusing on serving the heavy-duty transportation sector. The surplus heat generated during production will be utilized in Helen's district heating system, significantly boosting the plant's energy efficiency. Sari Mannonen, Helen's New Business and Hydrogen SVP, highlighted the project's innovative integration of electricity, transport, heating, and hydrogen sectors, showcasing hydrogen as a crucial component of Helen's new strategy. The initiative aligns with Finland's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035, with the government backing plans to increase the country's green hydrogen production to at least 10% of the EU's total by 2030. Currently, Finland consumes approximately 140 kilotonnes of hydrogen annually, with expectations to double this amount in the coming years. Sweco and Helen have a history of collaboration, particularly in heating and cooling plant projects, solidifying their partnership in this groundbreaking hydrogen venture.
