TotalEnergies and RWE Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Project in the Netherlands
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies acquires 50% stake in OranjeWind offshore wind farm, planning to use the renewable electricity production to power electrolyser projects for green hydrogen.
  • The green hydrogen produced will help decarbonize TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe, aiming to cut CO2 emissions by around 5 million tons per year by 2030.
  • OranjeWind project, located in the North Sea, will not only produce green power and hydrogen but also support the stability of the Dutch grid with electric boilers and battery storage.
  • Collaboration between TotalEnergies and RWE signifies a milestone in the European energy transition, showcasing the integration of offshore wind power with green hydrogen electrolysers in the Netherlands.
TotalEnergies has partnered with German renewable developer RWE to acquire a 50% stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. The purpose of this collaboration is to utilize renewable electricity from the wind farm to power electrolyser projects for producing green hydrogen. TotalEnergies plans to dedicate the green hydrogen to decarbonize its refineries in Northern Europe, with a target of reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 5 million tons per year by 2030. The project aims to replace the hydrogen currently used in TotalEnergies' refineries, thereby avoiding the emission of about 400,000 tons of CO2 annually. The OranjeWind project, won by RWE in 2022, will not only generate green power and hydrogen but also contribute to the stability of the Dutch grid through electric boilers and battery storage. Construction of the wind farm is set to commence in 2026, with full commissioning expected in early 2028. The collaboration between TotalEnergies and RWE represents a significant step in the energy transition in Europe, showcasing the synergy between offshore wind power and green hydrogen production.
