The UK and France have initiated a collaborative effort to enhance hydrogen research and development through a series of exchanges and events. In March 2023, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and President Macron agreed on a bilateral energy partnership, focusing on transitioning to a net zero energy system, including work on hydrogen. This partnership led to the organization of a brokerage event involving the UK's national hydrogen research hubs - UK HyRES and UK HiACT, and their French counterparts, to explore collaboration opportunities. In January 2024, six researchers from the UK's national hydrogen hubs visited France for a three-day program aimed at understanding the French hydrogen landscape. They attended the Hyvolution tradeshow and visited key hydrogen hubs in the Greater Paris region, leading to a bilateral workshop in Paris where researchers from both countries shared insights and ideas for collaboration. The collaboration resulted in the establishment of a bilateral hydrogen strand at a science, innovation, and tech dialogue in London, with plans for future workshops and the creation of a UK-France Hydrogen Research Working Group. This group aims to foster collaboration through sharing of research facilities, data networks, exchanges, internships, visits, and joint research funding opportunities, including those provided by Horizon Europe, indicating a positive outlook for the future of hydrogen research collaboration between the two countries.
