US DOE Invests $62m in Clean Hydrogen Projects Across America
Key Ideas
  • The US Department of Energy has allocated $62 million to 20 clean hydrogen projects in 15 states to accelerate the development and deployment of clean hydrogen technologies.
  • Key focus areas include hydrogen fuelling infrastructure, hydrogen-powered port equipment, and promoting equitable deployment of hydrogen solutions.
  • Clean hydrogen is crucial for decarbonising industries, supporting energy independence, reducing emissions, and creating job opportunities across the nation.
  • Projects prioritize community engagement and justice, with a focus on ensuring that clean hydrogen benefits all Americans, especially historically underserved communities.
The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a substantial investment of $62 million in 20 clean hydrogen projects spanning 15 states. These projects aim to expedite the development and implementation of clean hydrogen technologies in key areas such as hydrogen fuelling infrastructure and hydrogen-powered port equipment. The overarching goal is to ensure the equitable deployment of hydrogen solutions, with a specific emphasis on reaching all Americans with the benefits of clean energy. The selected projects cover various innovative efforts to guarantee that the advantages of clean energy are accessible to all citizens, showcasing the nation's dedication to constructing a robust, fair, and clean hydrogen economy. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm highlighted the importance of this funding, stating that it will not only create new economic prospects nationwide but also solidify America's global leadership in clean energy technologies for the future. The projects, overseen by the DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), are spread across five main areas. These include hydrogen fuelling for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, standardised hydrogen refuelling stations for commercial trucks, hydrogen fuel cell-powered port equipment demonstration, permitting and safety for hydrogen deployment, and equitable community engagement initiatives. Each area has dedicated funding aimed at advancing clean hydrogen technologies and promoting economic growth. Clean hydrogen, as an energy carrier, plays a critical role in various industries like fertiliser production and steelmaking. It can be produced from different clean energy sources such as renewables and nuclear power, making it essential for decarbonising challenging sectors like heavy-duty transportation and industrial processes. By fostering clean hydrogen technologies, the US aims to enhance energy independence, decrease emissions, and stimulate economic development, with a significant emphasis on job creation. Furthermore, these projects underscore a commitment to equity and environmental justice, with a strong focus on ensuring that the benefits of clean hydrogen reach all communities, especially those that have been historically underserved. Through the implementation of comprehensive Community Benefits Plans (CBPs), the initiatives aim to ensure that the clean hydrogen economy is inclusive and beneficial for all Americans. The US' dedication to an inclusive clean energy transition, as reflected in these projects, aims to deliver prosperity and sustainability for the entire nation.
