Key Ideas
  • USDOT's FRA announces over $2.4 billion in funding for 122 rail projects in the U.S., with a focus on hydrogen-related technologies in California, Colorado, and Pennsylvania.
  • Projects include replacing diesel locomotives with battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell locomotives, safety experiments on rail vehicles powered by hydrogen and natural gas, and research on dual-fuel combustion engines using hydrogen.
  • The grants aim to enhance rail safety, reliability, and resilience, reduce disruptions, lower costs, and minimize pollution, benefiting rural communities and supporting diverse rail improvements across the country.
  • The CRISI Program prioritizes small, vital railroads, emphasizing a range of safety and service enhancements, from track upgrades to fleet modernization, to boost the American economy and regional supply chains.
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has revealed plans to allocate more than $2.4 billion in funding for 122 rail improvement projects across the United States. Notably, this funding includes support for hydrogen-related transportation projects in California, Colorado, and Pennsylvania. In California, $36.5 million will be directed to the California Air Resources Board to replace diesel locomotives with battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell locomotives. Colorado State University-Pueblo will receive $11.7 million for safety experiments on rail vehicles powered by compressed hydrogen and natural gas, with partners contributing a matching amount. Additionally, East Erie Commercial Rail in Pennsylvania will benefit from $48.4 million for research on dual-fuel combustion engines utilizing hydrogen. These investments aim to enhance rail safety, reliability, and resilience, while also facilitating quicker transportation with reduced disruptions, lower costs, and decreased pollution. The projects will have a positive impact on rural communities and various regions, covering a wide range of rail improvements from track upgrades to fleet modernization. The Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program, through which these grants are administered, prioritizes smaller railroads essential to the American economy, emphasizing safety and service advancements to boost national supply chains.
