Wood plc and KBR to Work on Blue Hydrogen and Ammonia Project in Duqm, Oman
Key Ideas
- Oman Shell has awarded contracts to Wood plc and KBR for the Blue Horizons project in Duqm, Oman.
- The project aims to produce low-carbon blue hydrogen and ammonia for local industries and international markets, with plans for carbon capture and storage.
- Wood will handle pre-FEED services and design the production plant, marine facilities, pipeline, and CO2 injection plant with a multi-country team.
- KBR will provide its blue ammonia technology, including licensed engineering design for the ammonia plant using hydrogen from Shell's Blue Hydrogen technology.
Oman Shell has recently assigned contracts to Wood plc and KBR for the Blue Horizons project in Duqm, Oman. This project focuses on generating low-carbon blue hydrogen and ammonia by converting natural gas into hydrogen and CO2. The produced blue hydrogen and ammonia are intended for both local use within the Duqm Special Economic Zone and for exportation to global markets. Additionally, the project includes plans for carbon capture and storage (CCS) to enhance its environmental sustainability. Wood plc will be responsible for delivering pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the project. They will be tasked with designing various components such as the integrated blue hydrogen and ammonia production plant, marine facilities with ammonia storage, a 200-kilometer pipeline, and a CO2 injection plant. Wood plc plans to employ teams from the UK, Ireland, Italy, India, and Oman to complete the work by 2025. On the other hand, KBR has been contracted by Oman Shell for its expertise in blue ammonia technology. KBR's role will involve providing licensed proprietary engineering design for a 3,000 tonnes per day ammonia plant using hydrogen derived from Shell's Blue Hydrogen technology. The collaboration between Oman Shell, Wood plc, and KBR signifies a significant step towards sustainable energy production and utilization in Oman's industrial sector.
