South & City College Birmingham has unveiled a new training facility in Birmingham dedicated to supporting the automotive sector with the necessary skills to service and maintain hydrogen fuelled vehicles. The £1.5m grant from the Office for Students has enabled the college to establish this facility, which includes specialized training for light vehicles, PSVs, and HGVs. The launch event, graced by the Mayor of the West Midlands, highlighted the importance of preparing for the transition to alternatively-fueled vehicles in light of the government's plan to phase out traditional vehicles. The partnership between the college and Enginius, a part of Faun Zoeller specializing in hydrogen-powered municipal vehicles, has facilitated the transformation of this vision into a reality. The workshop, spanning 450m², is equipped with vehicle lifts and an EV training area to ensure comprehensive training for engineers. The Principal, Mike Hopkins MBE, emphasized the need for skilled engineers in maintaining commercial fleet operations transitioning to alternatively-fueled vehicles, such as hydrogen. The college's dedication to addressing the whole hybrid vehicle sector, from heavy to light vehicles, aligns with the evolving needs of the automotive industry and provides a significant opportunity for job creation and upskilling in the region.
