Brandenburg Boosts Hydrogen Infrastructure for Heidekrautbahn Railway
Key Ideas
  • Brandenburg allocates EUR2.3 million to enhance hydrogen infrastructure for Heidekrautbahn railway due to rising costs and supply chain disruptions.
  • Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB) transitions trains to hydrogen-powered fuel cells, a move towards sustainable transportation.
  • Barnim district plans to convert buses and waste collection vehicles to hydrogen fuel, requiring further development of refueling infrastructure.
  • Total investment estimated at EUR116 million for hydrogen conversion, emphasizing the importance of expanded funding for operational conditions.
The state of Brandenburg in Germany is intensifying its efforts to boost the hydrogen infrastructure associated with the Heidekrautbahn railway. An additional EUR2.3 million is being injected into the project by the Ministry of Economic Affairs to address escalating costs linked to global crises and supply chain disruptions. Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB) has taken a significant step towards sustainable transportation by transitioning its trains on the Heidekrautbahn line to hydrogen-powered fuel cell trains. Additionally, the Barnim district aims to gradually convert buses and waste collection vehicles to hydrogen fuel, necessitating the development of a comprehensive refueling infrastructure. The total investment needed for the hydrogen conversion is estimated to reach around EUR116 million. Sven Tombrink from NEB highlighted the importance of the increased funding in establishing the operational conditions required for the hydrogen trains, with a particular emphasis on the renovation of the operational site in Basdorf for the maintenance and servicing of the new hydrogen vehicles. The Heidekrautbahn, which was disrupted by the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, is now part of the i2030 investment program focused on enhancing rail infrastructure in the capital region. Plans are in progress for the Heidekrautbahn to connect Wilhelmsruh station to Gesundbrunnen station, with the initial aim of resuming train services on this route in 2023.
