The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $2.2 billion in award commitments for two Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs, the Gulf Coast H2Hub, and the Midwest H2Hub, as part of the H2Hubs program established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These hubs aim to kickstart a national network of clean hydrogen producers, consumers, and connective infrastructure. The Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, led by HyVelocity (HyV), plans to leverage renewable energy and natural gas to drive down hydrogen costs and aims to create 45,000 direct jobs. The Midwest Hydrogen Hub, led by the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen LLC (MachH2), will decarbonize industries across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan, expecting to create 12,000 direct jobs. These hubs will reduce emissions, support renewable power expansion, and enhance American energy independence. The program's overall goal is to strengthen the economy by driving private sector investment in clean hydrogen and creating new economic opportunities. The investment in the H2Hubs program is intended to match billions of dollars from recipients, contributing to job creation, economic growth, and positioning the U.S. as a leader in emerging energy industries. The selected H2Hubs are set to collectively produce millions of metric tons of hydrogen annually, aligning with the 2030 U.S. production target and aiding in lowering emissions from hard-to-decarbonize industrial sectors. This initiative supports the Biden-Harris Administration's approach to addressing the climate crisis and building a clean and equitable energy future for all Americans.
