Empowering Maritime Educators for a Sustainable Future at World Maritime University
Key Ideas
  • WMU conducted a Train-the-Trainer program to educate maritime educators and professionals on alternative fuels like ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen.
  • The program is part of a larger initiative by the IMO and MJT-TF to create a training framework for seafarers to transition to zero greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The training covered properties, environmental impacts, safety protocols, and emergency responses related to alternative fuels, benefiting 26 WMU MSc students.
  • Collaboration with various stakeholders, including UNGC, ICS, ITF, and Lloyd’s Register Foundation, highlights the industry-wide effort towards sustainability and decarbonization.
The World Maritime University recently organized a Train-the-Trainer program aimed at equipping maritime educators and professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to train seafarers on alternative fuels such as ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen. The initiative is part of the 'Baseline Training Framework for Seafarers in Decarbonization' project, supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJT-TF). The training focused on developing competencies for seafarers as the shipping industry strives to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions. Participants, including 26 WMU MSc students specializing in Maritime Education and Training (MET) and Maritime Energy Management (MEM), received in-depth knowledge on alternative fuels, safety procedures, emergency responses, and bunkering practices. The program's materials are aligned with research outcomes from previous phases of the project. Collaboration with key stakeholders like the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), and others indicates a collective commitment to sustainability in the maritime sector. As the industry accelerates efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, training programs like the one at WMU play a crucial role in enhancing understanding and readiness for the adoption of alternative fuels, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime industry.
