Gujarat's Green Hydrogen Challenge: Skilling 3 Lakh Professionals by 2030
Key Ideas
  • Gujarat aims to produce 3.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, requiring 3 lakh trained professionals in production, storage, and electrolyser manufacturing.
  • Skilling efforts are currently underfunded, posing a major challenge to the state's green hydrogen ambitions.
  • Germi suggests incentivizing skilling programs with Aadhaar-based rewards and refundable deposits to attract candidates and ensure placements with reasonable salaries.
  • Public-private collaboration, as seen in oil and gas CPSUs, could serve as a successful model for creating employable manpower in the green hydrogen sector.
In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (Germi) has highlighted the significant need for skilled professionals in green hydrogen production and related sectors to achieve the state's ambitious target of producing 3.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. Dr Biswajit Roy of Germi emphasized the shortage of skilled manpower as a critical roadblock to Gujarat's green hydrogen goals, estimating a demand for nearly 3 lakh trained professionals by 2030. While the state has allocated land for major players in the industry like Reliance and Adani, Germi warns that urgent large-scale training programs are essential. Skilling efforts are currently lacking in funding and structured approaches, hindering the state's progress. To address this, Roy proposed incentivizing skilling programs with Aadhaar-based rewards and refundable deposits, aiming to link skilling with assured placements and reasonable salaries. Public-private collaboration, particularly models observed in oil and gas CPSUs, is suggested to create employment-ready manpower for Gujarat's green energy sector. The focus on vocational skills over academic qualifications is crucial for a smooth transition to a green energy-based economy, given the limited time available. By adopting successful collaboration frameworks, Gujarat aims to prepare its workforce to drive its clean energy agenda.
