During a meeting in London, IMO's Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW) discussed the need for guidelines for seafarers working on ships powered by alternative fuels. Draft interim generic guidelines were agreed upon and will be submitted to the Maritime Safety Committee for approval in June 2025. The Sub-Committee emphasized the importance of industry-wide guidelines and specific fuel/technology-specific guidelines. Specific training guidelines are currently being developed for methyl/ethyl alcohol-fuelled ships, and the Correspondence Group is working on guidelines for various alternative fuels, including hydrogen. The group will report its progress at the next Sub-Committee session. Additionally, the meeting addressed matters such as the STCW Convention and Code review, accessibility of seafarer medical information, validation of revised training courses, and reports on fraudulent certificates.
