In a significant achievement for India, the country has unveiled its first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel vessel, marking a breakthrough in the shipping and inland waterway transport sectors. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh praised the collaborative effort between public and private sectors that led to the development of this vessel, which features a hydrogen fuel cell-based drivetrain. The vessel, developed by Cochin Shipyard Ltd. with drivetrain technology by KPIT and foundational work by CSIR, is seen as a stepping stone towards larger hydrogen fuel-driven sea vessels. Dr. Singh highlighted this success during a review meeting of CSIR's initiatives, emphasizing the importance of aligning scientific pursuits with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of self-reliance. CSIR's NMITLI programme, a public-private partnership initiative, has played a key role in driving technological advancements. Recent successes under the programme include the commercialization of Raman spectrometers and the development of fuel cell technology for various sectors. The Minister commended these achievements as catalysts for India's growth and urged CSIR to further strengthen industry collaborations and pursue innovative R&D initiatives in line with national priorities.
