International Maritime Organization Launches Train-the-Trainer Programme for Sustainable Shipping
Key Ideas
  • The Train-the-Trainer Programme by IMO aims to equip maritime professionals with skills to train others on key fuels like ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen for shipping decarbonization.
  • The programme, conducted at MTCC-Asia in collaboration with various organizations, included practical sessions, scenario-based learning, and safety equipment demonstrations.
  • Participants from IMO-funded and self-funded countries in Asia, along with representatives from NGOs and industry partners, were involved in the training initiative.
  • IMO's Sub-Committee on Human Element progress with interim guidelines for training seafarers on ships powered by alternative fuels and new technologies, to be finalized in June 2025.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has initiated a large-scale Train-the-Trainer Programme on Alternative Fuels for Sustainable Shipping. The first training session, held at Shanghai Maritime University's MTCC-Asia, gathered 35 participants to empower maritime professionals in training others on crucial fuels for decarbonizing shipping, including ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen. The Programme, implemented by the World Maritime University (WMU) in association with the Maritime Just Transition Task Force and IMO Secretariat, received positive feedback after being trialed in December 2024. Noteworthy updates to the training course included practical sessions, scenario-based learning, and safety equipment demonstrations. Participants funded by IMO hailed from various Asian countries, while self-funded attendees represented China, Hong Kong, Japan, Republic of Korea, and Singapore. The collaboration extended to NGO and industry partners nominated by the Maritime Just Transition Task Force, such as the United Nations Global Compact, International Chamber of Shipping, International Transport Workers' Federation, and Lloyd's Register Foundation. Furthermore, the IMO's Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping made progress by agreeing on draft interim guidelines for training seafarers on ships powered by alternative fuels and new technologies. These guidelines are set to be reviewed by the Maritime Safety Committee for approval in June 2025.
