The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is taking proactive steps to enhance its competencies by sending its Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Special Team to China to learn about hydrogen. The department aims to observe industry practices in China, establish collaborations, and bring back valuable skills and competencies to aid regulatory development in Malaysia. JBPM's director-general emphasized the importance of being technologically advanced to ensure that the department's skills remain current. With plans to send three teams to China, the focus is on acquiring knowledge that can contribute to disaster response in Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak. The Hazmat team's objective includes identifying standard operating procedures for handling disasters caused by chemical explosions, such as incidents involving high concentrations of hydrogen. The director-general highlighted the significance of being prepared for the infrastructure development expected in Sarawak, a rapidly growing state transitioning into a major economic hub. This initiative is crucial for JBPM in enforcing fire safety measures and conducting efficient firefighting and rescue operations in the face of evolving challenges.
